The Peak District

England’s first national park: gritstone edges, limestone dales, and cities close enough to fill the car parks.

Stay
2 nights
Best for
walking, villages, a northern landscape without the drive to the Lakes
Base
Castleton or Hathersage for the Dark Peak. A White Peak village if the dales are the point. One base.

The Peak is two rocks. The Dark Peak is gritstone, moor and edges — Mam Tor, Stanage, Kinder. The White Peak is limestone dales, stone villages and rivers that disappear. They need different days. A visitor who tries to “do the Peak” from Bakewell in a single afternoon sees a pudding and a car park.

Sheffield and Manchester are close, which is a blessing for the train and a warning about Sunday afternoon. Stay overnight and walk in the morning.

See

  • An edge, not a list

Mam Tor and the ridge toward Lose Hill is the classic first walk. Stanage is the one if you want gritstone and space.

  • A dale

Dovedale or Lathkill. Limestone, water, and a path that does not require a summit to feel finished.

  • A village after the walk

Castleton, Eyam or Tideswell. Hathersage if you are on the train. Bakewell is the market town, not the landscape.

  • A cavern only in the rain

The show caves are fine wet-weather tickets. They are not the park.
